How to use these
One page, one try, one week
You do not need to read all of these. Pick the one thing that is hardest in your house right now. Try it for a week. Write down what happened, even if it was nothing. Then bring that to your BCBA, or call us and we will read it with you.
That is not us being modest about handouts. It is how the therapy itself works. One change at a time, measured, kept or dropped based on what the notes say.

Quick answers
What families and professionals ask us most
- How long does it take to start ABA after a referral?
- It varies. Most of the wait is funding approval from the health plan or regional center, then matching a therapist to the family's schedule. Silence usually means paperwork, not that the family was forgotten. Read more →
- Can an ABA therapist observe in a classroom?
- Yes, with the teacher's agreement and written consent from the parent. Many districts have their own process too, so check yours before you need it. Read more →
- How long does a new bedtime routine take?
- Plan on weeks, not days. The first few nights are often harder, because your child is checking whether the new pattern is real. Keep going and write down the two times each night. Read more →
- Is reinforcement in ABA the same as bribery?
- No. The difference is timing. A bribe is offered first, to stop something already happening, which teaches the behavior you wanted to stop. Reinforcement comes after the behavior you want to see more of. Read more →
- What counts as asking?
- Anything your child can already do, or nearly: a word, a sound, a sign, handing you a picture, or looking at you. It does not need to be a sentence. Everyone at home should accept the same thing. Read more →
- Why is turning off screens so hard for my child?
- Stopping something you enjoy is hard at any age. Give a warning based on events, like "two more songs," since a young child can't judge five minutes. Then hand them the next thing before you take the screen away. Read more →
- Why does my child melt down in stores?
- Stores are loud, bright and crowded, and full of things your child wants and can't have. That is a lot at once. Most meltdowns are about getting something, getting out of something, getting attention, or how something feels in their body. You don't need to know which one in the moment. Read more →
